Departments and Groups

Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology

Acoustics

The Acoustics department focuses on recording and reproduction methods for spatial audio signals. The goal is to achieve a natural, spatial sound experience in various listening environments. Sound perception (psycho acoustics), simulation of sound fields and triggering methods for microphone and speaker arrays belong to the main competences of this department. New developments are used for several applications in different markets, e. g. in sound engineering, consumer electronics as well as  automotive and mechanical engineering.

Audio-visual Systems

The Audio-visual Systems research group develops procedures, components and systems for novel audio-visual applications. For this, the focus is on automated analysis of audio-visual content, interactive services, personalized applications and immersive systems.

Bio-inspired Computing

In Bio-inspired Computing, computer simulation models for hearing and seeing are developed, tested in different practical applications and applied in hardware platforms.

Data Representation and Interfaces

The Data Representation and Interfaces group focuses on the development of standard-conformant technologies in content management and knowledge transfer, in document management (repositories) and metadata for learning and practicing environments. Further key research areas are human-machine-interaction and adaptive personalized interfaces for life sciences.

Children's Media

Children are the future of our society, and the way children use media has a main impact on this future. The Children’s Media department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology, IDMT, deals with technology based media that is important for children and young people. With its research, this group contributes to the development of new media technology that is used in future media offers to children.

Media Distribution and Security

Consumers increasingly act as producers and distributors, mobility is becoming more and more important, and the use of social networks and cloud services is on a rise. Such trends lead to an abundance of new opportunities for handling and using media content, but at the same time they create many challenges e.g. with respect to data authenticity, privacy and copyright.

Project Group Hearing, Speech and Audio Technology

The goal of the project group is to further develop the scientific and technological knowledge in hearing rehabilitation, speech communication and audio technology to decisively improve hearing in everyday situations.

Semantic Music Technologies

The Semantic Music Technologies research group develops technologies and solutions for automatic music analysis. These are used in music search and recommendation engines, but also in music games, learning software and in music production. The core expertise of the group is in signal processing and pattern recognition.
