GenreID

To help consumers find new tracks matching their preferred music style, an application for musical genre description, "GenreID", has been created by the Fraunhofer Institute.

"GenreID" works like a classical pattern recognition system. During a training phase several music pieces are assigned to one genre. The features of the training pieces, discarded in so called representative classes, describe the accordant genre category. Thus, an unknown piece of music is affiliated to a certain genre by comparing the describing features with the representative classes. At present nine genre categories are differed - Classic, Rock/Pop, Jazz, Electronic, Rap, R'n'B, Country, Reggae and Speech.

Internet based music service providers can enhance their browsing systems by this innovative module in order to recommend the user music pieces from the same genre category. Home users benefit from "GenreID" when automatically generating "personalized radio" play lists from their own music collection. In professional products "GenreID" can help selecting music for compiling radio program or for selecting the correct music category as soundtrack for a movie or commercial. Furthermore, an implementation e.g. in the car radio for the automatic search of the radio station which is playing the favoured kind of music is imaginable. "GenreID" is also applicable on embedded systems as a result of compact reference classes and the very fast classification.
