"GenreID" works like a classical pattern recognition system. During a training phase several reference music pieces are assigned to certain musical properties (e.g., the genre Jazz). Afterwards, an unlabeled piece of music can be assigned to the pre-defined classes by comparing the describing features with the representative classes. These properties are basically unlimited, for example they can comprise the genre (Rock, Jazz, Country etc.), the mood (happy, sad, aggressive etc.) or instrumentation (acoustic, electroacoustic, synthetic).

Internet based music service providers use the technology recommend the user music pieces. Home users benefit from "GenreID" when automatically generating "personalized radio" play lists from their own music collection. In professional products "GenreID" can help selecting music for compiling radio program or for selecting the correct music category as soundtrack for a movie or commercial.
