Music Recommendation with mufin

Nowadays, thousands of titles are available to music lovers via television, internet or radio. This huge amount of content is difficult to overview. But how can you find the songs matching to your personal style and mood in this "music jungle"? The Fraunhofer IDMT has developed an innovative system that is able to analyze pieces of music and to recommend similar items to the user, thus serving as a fully automated recommendation engine.

Automatic Content-based Music Recommendation

The music recommendation system mufin relies on the extraction of significant musical features from music files. The extracted features of a given piece of music are compared to the characteristics of registered audio files in a database. As a result, the user receives a sorted list of results containing similar music – comparable with Internet search engines.

The special thing about mufin is that it works in an entirely automated manner. In contrast to other recommendation engines, the system needs no manually generated database. Moreover, the user may weight differently the used features, for instance, in order to exclusively search for files with a similar rhythm.

The technology behind mufin was jointly developed at the Fraunhofer IIS and the Fraunhofer IDMT under the working title SoundsLike and can still be licensed in it’s basic version from Fraunhofer IDMT.
