A/V Error Detection Libraries

QC Components

The A/V Error Detection Libraries provide automatic detection of audio-visual errors for A/V production, content management, and archiving. Since the detections run on signal level, the technology can be applied at any position within a process chain, e.g. ingest, play-out, transcoding, etc.

Visual Error Detection

Analyzes designated visual errors on decoded video frames or within a defined region of interest (ROI) with respect to their specific characteristics. All analyzing processes run on pixel level (base-band analysis).

Input: Decoded (uncompressed) video frames, color spaces: YUV 4:2:0 PLANAR, RGB, BGR, BGRA, GRAY, other formats upon request

Visual Detection Modules

  • Blocking Detects blocking artifacts for block sizes of 8x8, 4x4, and 16x16.Blocking Detects blocking artifacts for block sizes of 8x8, 4x4, and 16x16.
  • Blur Detects blurry regions or areas with smooth textures or less detail.
  • Exposure Detects overexposed and underexposed frames.
    Ringing Detects ringing artifacts occurring only on strong edges.
  • Noise Detects visual noise as an indication for random modification of pixel intensities.
  • Freeze Detects freezes where content does not change over consecutive video frames.
  • Field Order Detects the field dominance.
  • Deinterlacing Detects deinterlacing artifacts occurring when combining two sub fields within a single frame.
  • Black Frame Detects black frames if there are low pixel intensities within a frame.
  • Black Bars Detects horizontal and/or vertical black bars.
  • Quick Scan Options Fast check for Blur, Blocking, and Ringing.

Audio Error Detection

Analyzes designated audio errors on decoded audio frames with respect to their specific characteristics. The analyzing processes run on time signal or frequency spectrum (base-band analysis).

Audio Detection Modules

  • Audio Clipping Detects audio clipping caused by overshooting the signal level out of the permitted signal range.
  • Audio Dropout Detects audio dropouts, e.g. interruptions of the audio signal.
  • Audio Channel Similarity Detects the (unintended) similarity of audio channels.
  • Monotone Audio Detects disturbance tones, e.g. Audio Hum (50Hz, 60Hz), or Test Tones (e.g. 1kHz).
  • Loudness Detects loudness parameters according to recommendations ITU-R BS.1770-3 and EBU R 128.
  • Coming soon: Wow & flutter, audio clicks, phase reversal, audio noise.

Media Quality

Accumulation and interpretation of error detection results considering the module’s individual significance, e.g. for automatic quality assessment or for visualization of the overall media quality.

The Media Quality component is customizable and supports pre-defined user profiles for different application scenarios.
