Prof. Joachim Bös named new Executive Director of the Fraunhofer IDMT

Prof. Joachim Bös was named the new Executive Director of the Fraunhofer IDMT in Ilmenau, Germany, on October 1, 2019, taking over from Prof. Udo Bechtloff, who had served as the institute’s acting director since February 2018 and will be leaving on October 31, 2019. In addition to managing the institute, Joachim Bös will also be in charge of setting up the research group “Industrial Applications of Media Technologies” at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Technische Universität Ilmenau in Ilmenau, Germany, as a newly appointed professor. He previously worked at the Technische Universität Darmstadt in Darmstadt, Germany, as Academic Director and deputy head of the research group System Reliability, Adaptive Structures, and Machine Acoustics SAM.

Prof. Joachim Bös has been taken charge of the Fraunhofer IDMT on October 1, 2019.

Professor Bös will be strategically contributing his previous research in technical acoustics, machine acoustics, structure-borne sound, and the assessment and influencing of sound generation to help shape the future focus of the Fraunhofer IDMT. “At the Fraunhofer IDMT, I will be able to build on long-time, globally recognized research in immersive audio playback and AI-based analysis of audiovisual content. I see great potential to build on my previous research approaches and unlock new fields of application in an industrial and mechanical engineering context. This is particularly true in the case of automated analysis of audio data for acoustic quality control and virtual acoustic product development. I would also like to keep working toward ensuring acoustic emissions are taken into account in the product-development process right from the outset – which has so far unfortunately rarely happened in industrial operations. I look forward to contributing my experience and expertise to further strengthen the institute’s core competencies, develop new areas of research, and unlock new fields of application. I will especially be relying on close cooperation with the Technische Universität Ilmenau and solid collaborations with the Fraunhofer IDMT’s many research partners.”

Prof. Joachim Bös’ appointment at the Fraunhofer IDMT and TU Ilmenau sees the Fraunhofer IDMT’s previous director, Prof. Udo Bechtloff, end his role as acting director. “I am very pleased we have been able to find a highly qualified, academically renowned successor in Joachim Bös. I wish him all the best with his new tasks and look forward to seeing the new, trendsetting research topics Professor Bös sets in motion in Ilmenau.”

Joachim Bös studied mechanical engineering at TU Darmstadt and at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, USA, before working as a research assistant and PhD student in the Mechatronics and Machine Acoustics research group at TU Darmstadt. Between 2003 and 2008, he was a research scientist at the competence center Mechatronics/Adaptronics of the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt, and in April 2004 he earned a PhD degree with a thesis on the topic of “Numerical shape optimization in structural acoustics” at TU Darmstadt. In 2008, he became a research assistant in the present-day System Reliability, Adaptive Structures, and Machine Acoustics SAM research group at TU Darmstadt, and in 2009 he was named deputy director of this group. Prior to his appointment at TU Ilmenau and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT, Joachim Bös was most recently the Academic Director of the SAM research group and continued to work part-time for the Fraunhofer LBF.

Professor Bös is the representative of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik e. V. (German Acoustical Society, DEGA) on the executive board of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e. V. (German Physical Society, DPG). As head of DEGA’s working group “Physical Acoustics” he is a member of DEGA’s executive board. He is also a member of DEGA’s working group “Education in Acoustics”. Joachim Bös is additionally a member of DEGA’s Noise Control Association (ALD), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Deutscher Hochschulverband (German Association of University Professors and Lecturers, DHV), the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV), and the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (Association of German Engineers, VDI).

Along with his active committee work, Professor Bös serves as a reviewer of project proposals and journal papers. His publications include the “Machine Acoustics” chapter in the most recent editions of DUBBEL – Handbook of Mechanical Engineering. He has also published various scientific, peer-reviewed articles in the likes of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, Acta Acustica united with Acustica, and the Journal of Vibration and Acoustics as well as numerous national and international conference papers. He has co-organized and co-chaired many national and international congresses, workshops, seminars, and conference sessions, including being the head of the organizing team for “DAGA 2012 – 38th German Annual Conference on Acoustics” in Darmstadt.
