Psychoacoustic evaluation parameters allow reliable determination of how variations in product characteristics affect sound quality

 

Enhancement of Speech Intelligibility

Scientists at Fraunhofer IDMT develop software solutions which automatically analyse and optimise the intelligibility of speech – for applications ranging from railway station announcements and mobile phone calls through to car navigation systems

 

Hearing Assistance for Telephone and Consumer Electronics

Speech Recognition

Speech detection systems allow operation of technical systems without visual or physical contact. The speech recognition technology of the Fraunhofer Project Group functions robustly and without an internet connection

 

Acoustic Monitoring

Using machine learning methods such as neural networks, the Fraunhofer researchers work on teaching computers the complex skill of hearing. Audio signal processing is modelled here on human hearing processes

 

Evaluation and User Studies

A central aspect of assistive technology development is integration of users. A database with over 2,400 test persons is available at the Oldenburg location for evaluation studies

More Information

The goal of the Project Group for Hearing, Speech and Audio Technology of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT is to implement scientific findings on auditory perception of normal and impaired hearing in technological applications. Main research is improving speech intelligibility, personalized audio reproduction in consumer electronics as well as computer-based recognition of speech and acoustic events.

The project group was established in Oldenburg in 2008 as a branch of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT.Through scientific cooperations, it has close links with the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, the Jade University of Applied Sciences Wilhelmshaven/Oldenburg/Elsfleth and other hearing research facilities in Oldenburg and is also a partner in the cluster of excellence »Hearing4all«.
