Machine, tool wear or workpiece monitoring
Machine failures, a shortage of skilled workers, and low automation levels are among the biggest challenges in industrial production. In metalworking in particular, a fifth of machine failures are due to tool condition. Tool wear leads to a loss of quality in the manufactured parts and increases production time, and therefore costs, due to unnecessary tool changes. Using innovative process and condition monitoring systems could prevent such failures and optimize tool service life.
Innovative automated quality control
According to experts in milling production, errors in a cnc metal milling machine, the quality of the component or the clamping of the workpiece can be deduced based on perceived acoustic stimuli. AI-based acoustic monitoring during metalworking processes, such as turning or milling, is expected to provide significant added value in the future when it comes to identifying sources of error.
Looking for R&D partners
Initial investigations have identified machining processes as a promising area for developing an intelligent product solution that can detect machine and manufacturing errors. For this reason, we at Fraunhofer IDMT in Ilmenau are seeking interested and reliable partners from mechanical and plant engineering, tool manufacturing, and the machining industry to collaborate on its development.
