Background noise can make it difficult to understand speech in agricultural machinery and other commercial vehicles—both for the person in the cab and for the person on the other end of the line.

In tractors, excavators, combine harvesters, truck cabs, and other work vehicles, clear verbal communication in the cab is often a challenge. The reason: agricultural and commercial vehicles are usually significantly noisier than passenger cars. As a result, standard communication solutions, such as hands-free systems, quickly reach their limits.

Background noise can make it difficult to understand speech during conversations—both for the person in the cab and for the person on the other end of the line.

The Fraunhofer IDMT in Oldenburg offers research and development services that optimize verbal communication as well as speech and music playback within the driver’s cab.

Our experts support customers in further developing their in-cab audio systems. The focus is on DSP-based optimization of audio recording and playback, supplemented by the selection and adjustment of suitable microphones as well as audio output via speakers. In addition, we offer analysis and improvement of the audio signal along the entire signal chain.

In workplaces that rely on headsets, headphones, or hearing protection, we can improve speech intelligibility with our innovative developments from the "Personal Hearing Systems" group. For example, we are collaborating with professional associations on intelligent hearing protection that also incorporates telecommunications solutions.

Overview of our Services

To specifically improve audio quality in cabins, we offer the following solutions:

Multimedia and Signal Routing:

We integrate all audio sources and output devices connected to the digital signal processor (DSP) into the system. Predefined control signals allow you to switch between them. The DSP checks whether the external devices are available to ensure the system operates reliably.

Sound control and volume control:

We optimize the interaction between the loudspeakers in the cab to achieve the best possible sound quality. This includes equalizing the loudspeakers and adjusting all relevant control parameters. In addition, we match the input and output levels of the audio sources and output devices managed by the DSP. The parameters required for this are determined through measurements specific to the cab and adjusted accordingly.

Signal enhancement and noise reduction:

We are improving the hands-free function in the driver's cab so that conversations are clearer for both parties. To do this, we reduce background noise from the vehicle and the cab in the outgoing audio signal, ensuring that it is as inaudible as possible to the person on the other end of the line. At the same time, we use echo cancellation to suppress the sound reproduced through the speakers in the microphone signal. This prevents callers on the other end from hearing their own voice as an echo.

Seamless smartphone integration:

Our experts assist with the integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into the optimized overall system of the driver's cab. To do this, we incorporate the necessary functions on the DSP side. This allows additional audio sources to be reliably added and controlled.

Optimization of microphones in the driver's cab:

We optimize the microphones used to capture speech in the driver's cab to ensure that voice signals are recorded as clearly as possible. To this end, we select suitable components available on the market whenever possible. Working closely with our customers, we aim to strike a balance between performance, durability, and price.

Optimizing audio output in the cab:

We optimize audio output through the speakers in the cab to ensure that speech, warning tones, and other audio signals are reproduced clearly and reliably. Here we also rely on commercially available components whenever possible.

End-of-line quality assurance:

We will develop a process for you that allows your quality assurance team to reliably verify the functionality of the entire system at the end of the manufacturing process. This ensures that all defined functions operate as intended and that the KPIs you have set can be verified in a clear and reproducible manner.

Voice interaction:

In addition, upon request, tests will be conducted to detect so-called “hotwords” using a speech recognition algorithm provided by Fraunhofer IDMT, in order to analyze the feasibility of robust voice control in the specific vehicle.

Communication with the machine's immediate surroundings:

As demonstrated with "The Hearing Car", our vehicle-based acoustic signal detection technology enables interaction with the immediate surroundings. Just like in a convertible, the surroundings can be perceived with accurate directionality without having to open a window or door. In addition to verbal communication with people, this also enables us to reliably detect predefined acoustic events, such as someone shouting “Stop!” or signals from emergency vehicles.
