Use Case: Optimizing speech intelligibility in film and broadcast media

Your challenge

Unintelligible dialogue in TV series, overly dominant background music in reality shows, or sports interviews drowned out by cheering can impair viewers’ media experience. Although volume and sound levels are monitored using technical measuring devices during media production, an objective metric for speech intelligibility has been lacking until now. Audio engineers typically listen to audio mixes frequently, which can lead to a habituation effect and an inaccurate assessment of intelligibility.

Your benefit

Our algorithms now provide production professionals in radio, television, and streaming with a tool to objectively measure speech intelligibility and optimize it in a targeted manner. This allows them to ensure that dialogue is evaluated consistently and remains consistently intelligible to the audience. This saves time in post-production, enhances audio quality, and improves the listening experience for viewers. Speech intelligibility measurement has already been implemented with various companies, for example in the Nuendo post-production software from Steinberg Media Technologies, as a plug-in from NUGEN Audio, and as an integration in TMxCore from RTW.

Extras

Other potential applications for improving speech intelligibility include, for example, communication systems in emergency dispatch centers or public address systems.
